FAQs About Dental Cleanings

Answers to Common Questions About Professional Cleanings

A: After an exam and digital x-rays, our doctors will determine exactly what type of cleaning best fits your gum health. We take into account factors such as your overall health, oral hygiene habits, how long it’s been since your last cleaning, gum pocket measurements, and any signs of inflammation or buildup.

A: Bleeding gums are almost always a sign of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. A professional cleaning and improved home care can usually reverse it.

A: Bad breath (halitosis) can often be due to plaque buildup or gum disease. Other medical or dietary causes can contribute as well. Learn more on our Bad Breath / Halitosis page.

A: Use a fluoride toothpaste with the ADA seal of approval. The brand or flavor doesn’t matter. Mouthwash isn’t essential for everyone and can be overused, killing both “good” and “bad” bacteria. However, a fluoride rinse once a day at night can benefit some patients.

Children can start using small amounts of fluoride toothpaste labeled for kids around age 2 (or even earlier with guidance from your dentist).

Toothpastes containing nano-hydroxyapatite are gaining popularity, but their long-term benefits aren’t yet as well established as fluoride.

Water flossers are great for cleaning around braces or retainers, but string floss still removes sticky plaque more effectively between teeth.

Patients with gum disease, braces, or certain medical conditions, as well as pregnant patients, may benefit from more frequent cleanings to maintain optimal gum health.
